The highly designed Dream Hotel Downtown which is owned by Vikram Chatwal Hotels recently opened in Chelsea and yesterday I got in for a sneak peek at the pubic spaces and snapped a few photos (see more below).
Frankly I LOVE the designs of the interiors which feels retro 70s meets our Twittered decade. A mix of woods and glass and big bulbous lamps over the dining area give the place a wonderful warm feel.
A back wall of glass leads you to the staircase to the pool above – the bottom of which can be seen simply by looking up from the lobby through the glass portholes into the pool itself.
In addition to the pool deck and its restaurant, there will be a rooftop restaurant in the north building. Unfortunately I was not able to get up there to snap some shots for you.
The 1966 Albert Ledner designed building was re-imagined by Handel Architects and received a “Cheesegrater” tag for its silver porthole facade from Curbed. Personally, I like it – it brings a fresh design to the corner of Chelsea and the Meatpacking District and adds another hotel to the mix of the Standard, The Maritime and the Gansevoort Hotel. It’s hard to believe the Gansevoort only opened 8 years ago.
New York is awaking from its 18 month development hibernation after the recessionary period and it’s going to be exciting to watch how different areas continue to re-invent or be added to. Photos by Tony Sargent
